Nov 9, 1930 - June 11, 2014 YUKON Charles Ray Townsend was born on a farm in Washington, OK to Maime and Pink Townsend on Nov. 9, 1930. He passed away on June 11, 2014, at the age of 83 in his home and surrounded by his loving wife of 32 years, Susan; and his only son, Zachary. He started in the oil field in 1950 working in a supply warehouse advancing to a Special Sales Representative. From the supply business, he entered into the drilling bit business for 13 years with Reed Rock Bit Company starting as a sales representative and advancing to Technical Service Engineer. January 1, 1970, he was employed with Viersen & Cochran Drilling Company as a Rock Bit Engineer. In 1973, he was promoted to Safety Director. He participated in the revision and publication of the IADC Safety Manual and the IADC Drilling Manual published by the University of Oklahoma. He was later promoted to Drilling Engineer and Field Superintendent. He retired in June 1996. Charlie loved to spend time with his family at Lake Texoma boating, water skiing, fishing and riding around in his GEM car looking for deer and visiting with his many friends. He had a love for flying so he became a pilot while working for Viersen & Cochran. In 1996, after he retired, he became a stay-at-home Dad, where he enjoyed taking Zach and his friends to sporting events, practices, field trips and to his farm in Washington. He was a member of Christ's Church in Yukon, OK; the Oklahoma City Petroleum Club; a 32nd Degree Mason; American Petroleum Institute; and International Association of Drilling Contractors - past chairman of the Oklahoma City chapter. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. He leaves behind the love of his life, Susan; and his loving son, Zachary and wife Krystal, of Yukon; three grandchildren, MaKinley, Braxton, and Caden; and nephew, Larry Henson and family. Memorial donations may be made to Christ's Church, 620 W. Vandament, Yukon, OK 73099. Viewing will be held at Smith & Turner funeral home, 201 E. Main, Yukon, 405-354-2533, on Saturday, June 14, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sunday, June 15, 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. Family Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2014, 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Turner funeral home. Services are at Christ's Church in Yukon, OK, on Monday, June 16, 2014, at 2 p.m., with Pastor John Miller and Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiating. Burial will be at Geary Cemetery, Geary, OK.
