September 17, 1923 - May 27, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY Charles C. Miles peacefully departed this life Sunday evening, May 27, 2012, at the age of 88. His faith, family, friends and work were his life.He was born September 17, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Rev. Frank and Carrie Miles. He was the third of four sons. Both parents and his brothers preceded him in death. Growing up in Fairfax, Oklahoma, in the 1920s, Charles attended the elementary school started by his mother in their home because of the "Jim Crow" law. He had to move to Tulsa to finish high school. After distinguished service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he completed his B.S. in Trade Education from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.He married the love of his life, Mary Lou Greenard, and to this union, two daughters were born, Gayle Miles-Scott and Vicki Miles-LaGrange. In 1955, Charles and Mary earned their Master's Degree from the University of Oklahoma. Charles credited his education with bringing him far from his humble beginnings. The 41-year education career of Charles Miles included teaching commercial arts, industrial arts and math beginning in the 1950s at Douglass High School. From 1972 until his retirement in 1987, Charles served as Assistant Principal in six high schools of the OKC Public Schools, where he was often at the vanguard of desegregation because of his professionalism, negotiation and problem-solving skills. He served as a Deacon and Trustee at St. John Missionary Baptist Church for over fifty years. Charles C. Miles was a devout Christian, and a hardworking man who was firm in his convictions yet kind in his attitude toward others. He was a good friend and neighbor. He was a good citizen and loyal to his country. He was an excellent and compassionate educator who cared about the "whole student" he served. As a longtime educator, Charles Miles influenced countless lives as he went about his own, involving himself in education, civic and political affairs. He was a devoted husband of 63 years, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; daughters, Gayle Miles-Scott and Vicki Miles-LaGrange; granddaughters, Brittany Couch (Sean), and Johnna Watts (Jimmie); great-granddaughters, Samantha, Cheyenne, Maysen and Soledad and; great-grandsons, Atticus and Terrance; nieces: Marilyn Powers, Rochester, New York; and Stephanie Miles, Kansas City, MO; nephews: Jimmy Miles and Hycle Miles, Kansas City, MO; and many other relatives and friends.The funeral services will be Saturday, June 2, 2012, 11 a.m., St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 5700 N. Kelley Ave. A community "Tribute to Charles Miles" will be Friday, June 1, 2012, at 6 p.m. in the small chapel of the same location. In lieu of flowers, a tax deductible contribution may be made to the Charles C. & Mary Lou Miles Scholarship Fund of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1146, Oklahoma City, OK 73101, (405) 235-5603. Services will be held under the direction of Temple and Sons Funeral Directors.
