(Don) Birchfield, 64, Choctaw/ Chickasaw/ Welsh and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, passed into the spirit world Sept. 7, 2012, in Lethbridge Alberta, Canada. He was born July 10, 1948, in Atoka County, OK.A 1966 graduate of U.S. Grant High School, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1975.Don was an award-winning author and a tenured professor of Native American Studies at the University of Lethbridge, where he was a champion of, and mentor to, numerous students.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent "In Memory of Professor D.L. Birchfield" to the Native American Student Association, and/or the Professor D.L. Birchfield Memorial, University of Lethbridge, 4401 University Dr, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, TlK 3M4.Don was preceded in death by his father, Richard Lee Birchfield; and his brother, Leon Birchfield.He is survived by his mother, Lavenia Birchfield; his sister, Evelyn (Birchfield) Williams and husband Mike, of Pflugerville, TX; his brother, Delbert Birchfield and wife Mary, of Crescent, OK; his brother, Ernest Birchfield and wife Susan, of Oklahoma City, OK; and numerous relatives, friends and colleagues.Services for Don will be at 3 p.m. Nov. 3, 2012, at the OK Choctaw Tribal Alliance, 5320 S. Youngs Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK.
