Smith-Mitchell July 18, 1944 - January 26, 2013 MIDWEST CITY Leota M. Smith-Mitchell began her life on July 18, 1944, in Sulphur, Oklahoma, to parents George Everett Smith and Melinda Leota Smith, and ended January 26, 2013. Life started out difficult for her as her father was a bootlegger all too fond of his product to be successful and therefore in her early life she lived in a shack with no indoor facilities. Her father's drinking often resulting in abuse, eventually ending in her parent's divorce after which her mother received welfare which resulted in life improvement. Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart from whom two children were born, John and Nancy Nichols. However, the marriage was unsuccessful and she left her husband and moved to Oklahoma City and began employment with a doctor where she remained for over 18 years. Upon his death she was employed in a series of jobs. In 1992 she met her future husband, James Mitchell. Their relationship had its many ups and downs but they were always faithful to each other. Finally, they married on April 19, 2010, and went on a honeymoon cruise and enjoyed life. However, a few months later, in October 2010, they were informed that medical tests indicated she had A.L.S. a terminal disease and given a prognosis of one and one-half years to live. Thereafter she took two more cruises to beautiful islands. Their last cruise was late December 2011. From that time, she was in and out medical facilities until her death. Unfortunately, her health was as difficult as was her early life but she faced it with the same courage she faced life. Lee always thought of life as something to continue to advance, so she graduated from UCO with a Bachelor's degree in April 1996. Lee was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters from two families. She is survived by her husband, two children and their families and two step-children and their families. Also, her sisters, Bobbie Payton, JoAnne Monger and Betty Clark and their families, and brother-in-law Jack Mitchell, sisters-in-law, Cathy Brainard and Saundra Morgan and their families. And lastly, her puppy, Fifi. The family would like to thank the employees of Physicians Choice Hospice for their assistance in this difficult time. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at 2:00p.m. at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 8805 N.E. 23rd, Midwest City, with interment to follow at Arlington Memory Gardens, Midwest City.
