March 26, 1937 - Feb 6, 2014 MIDWEST CITY Joe L. Akins, 76-year-old resident of Midwest City, OK, passed away February 6, 2014, in MWC, OK. Born March 26, 1937, in Hope, AR, he was the son of Jones and Myrtle (Duncan) Akins. Joe was a retired sgt. first class in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of Vietnam and a former supervisor at the Fort Sill Commissary. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Joe enjoyed fishing and traveling but especially spending time with his grandchildren. He loved taking them fishing and was active in their sports, both as a spectator and as an asst. coach and mentor. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and George; one sister, Sue Kelly; and one grandson, Bryson Hobbs. Survivors include his wife, Marva Akins, of the home; one daughter, Evette (Jesse) Lewis, of Tyler, TX; two sons: Orlando Jackson, of MWC, OK; and Charles Jackson, of Edmond, OK; five grandchildren, Laban and Isaiah Lewis, Malik and Jayla Jackson, and Zanariah Haynes; one sister, Versie (James) Wilson, of Fort Worth, TX; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Bill Eisenhour Northeast Chapel, with burial to follow with military honors at 2 p.m. at Fort Sill National Cemetery that afternoon.
