DANIEL CARMICHAEL Obituary

July 8, 1944 - Dec 11, 2014 OKLAHOMA CITY Daniel H. Carmichael, born on July 8, 1944, died on December 11, 2014, from nephrology cancer. He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Scott Carmichael. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Walta; daughters, Wendy Catherine Carmichael, and son-in-law, Michael Ibarra, of Houston, Texas; and Shelley Amanda Carmichael, and son-in-law, Josh DuBose, of Los Angeles, California. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Alabama, he received a degree in religion from Princeton University in 1966, where he was a member of the swim team and Charter Club. He received his medical degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1970. After a surgical residence at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and a stint at the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he began practice in Oklahoma City in 1977. His special interest was in cancer surgery, and he was a Principal Investigator for the NSABP Study Group, serving time on their Breast Cancer Surgery Committee in the 1980s. He enrolled many patients on protocols, including the lumpectomy study which showed the efficacy of breast-conserving surgery. For years, he enjoyed teaching medical students and residents, publishing many articles with the latter. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Western Surgical Society and many other organizations. Additionally, during the 1980s, he served as Medical Director of AMCARE, then the emergency medical services provider for central Oklahoma. Upon career redirection, he spent half his time on his ranch involved in fishing, hunting, hydrology projects to include dam construction and rain water harvesting, off-grid solar power systems, woodworking, and extensive reading in religion, history, and science. Numerous other pursuits filled the days. Major regret: No 30 hour days. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Dan was among the brightest and best I ever knew. We trained together in St Louis and my wife and I so enjoyed his wit and I always saw his surgical skill as unmatched. Peace Dan.

Dan was true friend. I knew Dan over a period of 50 years and he never failed to have enough time to talk, enough concern to listen, enough judgemnt to know when to offer input and enogh wisdom to give the very best advice possible. I will miss you, Dear Friend, and I pray for your everlasting happiness.

The world has lost a caring, thoughtful man; the type of man whose presence we badly need.

There are so many special memories of Dr. Carmichael and family. I will always remember the times spent on the ranch - hunting, fishing, riding 4 wheelers, and ending the day with a couple beers on the patio, just the guys. Most especially I look back on all the great memories camping in Colorado at Lake Reagan with Patrick and Dr. Carmichael. Sitting around the camp fire listening to George Strait, the Traveling Wilbury's, etc as Dr. Carmichael would tell us the hidden meanings of the songs and offered many other words of wisdom in life. When it came time to dinner Dr. Carmichael would literally make 9 pork chops, take 1 off the tray for himself, and tell Patrick and I in his dry humor “no prisoners”! We both knew what that meant and what had to be done! I found myself getting really choked up when I heard the news about his passing. Shortly thereafter I pulled up the guest book and saw his picture on the page – the classic tinted glasses and that famous smirk with his head just a bit tilted, I couldn't help but smile ear to ear. You were an incredible man with a wonderful family, and thank you for all the special memories!

Mrs. Carmichael, Wendy, & Shelley,

Those two beautiful men in our lives will most certainly be missed, but they most certainly will never be forgotten! I will always cherish every moment I was able to spend with your family, my thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Dr. Carmichael was the rarest of individuals in that I would routinely look forward to his comments and thoughts about pretty much any topic whatsoever. By turns caring, diligent, respectful, thought provoking and always deeply interesting he will be sorely missed.

Dan was bigger than life in many ways. He was one of the most intelligent and best read physicians I have known. Respected and loved by his students and colleagues he contributed many things to our medical community. He will be greatly missed.

One of the smartest and most compassionate people I ever knew, both inside and outside of medicine. May you rest in peace, Dan.

I really admired him and fondest memory was his facial expression when we were sitting on a cooler in Alaska and a Halibut in the cooler moved us both up and down, our combined wt was 500lbs. Also the pride in watching his son pull in Halibut and Salmon. He was a proud and noble man whom I miss his dry wit that made medicine enjoyable.
