Charles Richard Boyd, longtime owner of Boyd Chevrolet in Oklahoma City, departed this world on Saturday, January 25, 2003, and joined his daughter, Deborah Rene Bolding in a heavenly celebration. Charles was born December 15, 1933, in Renfroe, Leake Co., MS, to Bozie and Clara Belle Ashcraft Boyd. As a teenager, he began delivering parts for a car dealership in Pine Bluff, AR. Five years later he moved to Texas and within only a few years, became one of the most highly recognized parts managers in the auto industry, primarily while working for Friendly Chevrolet in Dallas, and Hudiburg Chevrolet in Ft. Worth. These successes eventually opened the door to buying his own dealership and in 1974, what had formerly been Downtown Chevrolet of Oklahoma City (and then Cupp Chevrolet), became Boyd Chevrolet. Charles immediately set about moving the dealership west to Portland and Reno. In just a few short years, Boyd Chevrolet became a nationally recognized concern and in 1980 moved to even more spacious quarters at 5000 West Reno. Boyd Chevrolet continued to pave new ground in the industry in its sales, service, and parts operations. Boyd received constant attention for operating one the first and finest 'open till midnight' service operations in the nation. The dealership continued to be a gem in the Chevrolet crown until Charles sold the business to a national concern in 2002. In times past, Charles owned other dealerships in Yukon, Del City, Tishomingo, and Wagoner, OK. Charles served on numerous boards of directors in the auto industry and was active in directing and financing projects for a number of charitable concerns, churches, and evangelistic ministries. He never forgot where he came from and when the opportunity arose, he was always quick to respond to the needs of those less fortunate. He was always there for a friend in need and anyone with Charles in their corner knew that they had just gained the advantage. Even with all the accolades and successes in his career, Charles' family and relationship with Jesus Christ were the most important aspects of his life. He surrendered his life to Jesus Christ as a young man and was a longtime member of Surrey Hills Baptist Church. Charles is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Ann Potts, his four children, Charles R. Boyd, Jr. (Rick) of Choctaw, Randol Wayne Boyd (Rand) of Roanoke, TX, Gregory Alan Boyd of Norman, and Shelly Diane Botkin of Yukon. He loved his 11 grandchildren, whose pictures lined his hospital wall: Chrystin Michela Doner, Charles R. (Trey) Boyd III, Cory Ryan Boyd, Caitlyn Marye Boyd, Colton James (Cole) Boyd, Jordan Thomas Boyd, Amy Rachelle Boyd, Charles Michael (Chase) Botkin, Lindsey Michelle Botkin, Dillon Lee Bolding, and Hanna Beth Schuyler. He also had one great grandson, Noah Richard Doner. Charles is also survived by a brother, Michael Lane Boyd, Sr., of Oklahoma City, and was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Evelyn Faye Boyd Sayle of Greenwood, MS. He has many nieces and nephews in Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Services will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 28, at Surrey Hills Baptist Church at Mustang Rd. and NW Expwy. Interment will be follow at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Online guestbook is available and tributes can be made at legacy.com.
