Ruth Lowry (Lewis) Murray

Ruth Lowry Lewis Murray, 92, passed away
March 27, 2013, in her home in San
Francisco.

Ruth was born in 1920 to Bessie
Lee and Lowry W. Lewis. She grew
up in Crestwood where she was active
in 4H and the 1932 county spelling
bee champion. Ruth earned a
Bachelor of arts from Transylvania
University and a Masters in psychology
from Syracuse. After graduating
from Syracuse she joined the American Red
Cross where she was stationed in India for the
remainder of World War II. While in India, Ruth
met many lifelong friends, and her future husband,
John Murray. They married in 1946. In 1950 Ruth
started her 40-year career at San Francisco State
University.

Ruth loved traveling, the theatre, and spending
time with family and friends. She was active
in many organizations including Stepping Stone,
Friends of the SF State Library, SF State Retirement
Association, Chi Omega and the China Burma
India Veterans Association. Ruth loved dancing and
singing – especially to the popular tunes from the
1940s. Ruth gave her time selflessly to her organizations
and her family. Her grandchildren will miss
her lullabies. We will all miss her beautiful smile and
big heart. We were blessed to have her for 92 years.

She is survived by Son Patrick, daughter-in-law
Theresa, grandchildren Monica, John, Angela and
Nicole and many friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Friday, April
12 at Stoess Funeral Home. Burial will follow in
Floydsburg Cemetery.
