Robert Benjamin Schardein, 85, of Jeffersontown, KY passed away on February 1, 2014. He was born in Champaign, Illinois on August 2, 1928. He married the love of his life, the former Dora Martha Boehnlein on April 28, 1962. They shared 51 years, 5 Children, 14 Grandchildren, 3 Great-Grandchildren and a beautiful life together.
He served in the US Navy, from July 2, 1946 until April 3, 1950, and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, China Services Medal, Navy Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Louisville Firefighter for 16 years. He served as the Chief of the LaGrange Fire and Rescue Department for 10 years and was also part of the Hazmat team. He served on the LaGrange City Council and was a member of the Rotary Club. He retired from British Petroleum after 23 years as a Manager in Production Control / Environmental Services. He was a member of Southeast Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Schardein, four children, Cheryl (Henry) White, Richard (Lisa) Schardein, Laura (Todd) Magers, Bryan (Wendy) Schardein, thirteen Grandchildren, three Great-Grandchildren, a sister Patricia Nilest, numerous Nieces and Nephews and his dog Tassie. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Robin Schardein McGannon, a grandson Benjamin Arthur Koier, his parents Orville and Clara Schardein, his brother, James Schardein, and two sisters, Barbara Webb and Marilyn Cundiff.
Visitation was held at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, from 2 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Funeral was held Wednesday, February 5, 2014, in the Chapel, at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY at 2 p.m.
