Shirley Mae Carrithers of Pewee Valley, born in 1936 to Johnnie and Gladys Gentry of Jeffersontown, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2017 while being surrounded by her loving family.
She was a long-time resident of Oldham County and member of Crestwood Baptist Church for over fifty-three years. Shirley believed, as the Bible tells us, "We are His hands and feet; I serve because the Lord asks us to serve…He wants to use us as his hands and his feet." She served as deacon, teacher, and servant in many areas of the Church based on that principal including director of the benevolence fund, which provided necessary support and encouragement for many people in the county when most needed. She was founder and idealist for Mission Crestwood, which continues to this day providing food, clothes, financial assistance, and spiritual growth for those less fortunate in our community, and played a major role in the resulting church-plant CrossPoint Church in association with the Mission. Shirley also worked at Crestwood Elementary School as a reading specialist for over twenty years, and continued to tutor children for many years after her retirement.
Shirley Carrithers is survived by her four children: Rusti, Cindy (Larry) Adams, Stephen (Lisa) Carrithers, and Andrew (Rita) Carrithers; her 8 grandchildren: Meghan, Katie, Jacob, Aaron, Brennan, Ashley, Laura, and Robert; her 2 great-grandchildren: Jackson and Madelyn; and her only brother: Johnnie (Phyllis) Gentry. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Russell Lee Carrithers.
Funeral services were held at Crestwood Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 with burial in Floydsburg Cemetery. Visitation was held at Crestwood Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 1 from 3 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to: Mission Crestwood, 7311 Highway 329, Unit #805, Crestwood, KY. 40014.
