OLEAN - Elaine Turek, 74, of Olean, died Wednesday (Sept. 25, 2013) at Schuyler Ridge nursing home in Clifton Park.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1939, in Buffalo, to Matthew and Gertrude Wozniak. Her husband, William Turek, died earlier this year on April 7.
She is survived by her son, Matthew (Kelly) Turek of Burnt Hills; and cousin, Dr. Kenneth Grieb of Oshkosh, Wis.
Elaine was a long-time resident of Olean. She graduated from East High School in Buffalo, and earned a bachelor of arts from D'Youville College. Elaine's teaching career began at South Park High School in Buffalo, where she taught from 1960 to 1966. While working on her master's degree in biology at St. Bonaventure University, she met William Turek, whom she married on Nov. 24, 1966. After completing her master's degree, Elaine taught biology at the Wellsville Central School district from 1966 to 1974. In 1977, she accepted a position at Arch Bishop Walsh High School in Olean, where she taught biology and chemistry, until her retirement in 1997.
Elaine was also very active in the Catholic Church. She was a parishioner of Transfiguration Church in Olean and St. Helens in Hinsdale. She was an active volunteer at St. Patrick's in Limestone following her retirement.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Guenther Funeral Home in Olean. The funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 2, 2013) at St. John's in Olean. Father Barry Allaire will celebrate the Mass. Burial will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga.
