Jack Blumenthal(1919-2013)

OLEAN - Jack Blumenthal, of 109 Virginia St., passed away peacefully Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2013) at his home.
Born July 1, 1919, in Manhattan, he was a son of Louis and Lena Miller Blumenthal. On Aug. 3, 1967, he married Jennie Cauvel, who survives.
Upon graduation from Long Island University, Mr. Blumenthal served with the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant during World War II, where he was stationed in Australia.
After his military service, he moved to Olean, where he and his father opened Blumenthal's Sporting Goods. He was later joined in business by his two sons until his retirement. He was one of the first retailers in the Olean area to offer electronics, audio-visual supplies, computer sales and motorcycles.
His lifelong vocation was photography, a passion he had held since he was a young boy. He was instrumental in the formation of local camera clubs and strongly supported the Niagara Frontier Regional Camera Club, which honored him with a lifetime achievement award in 2012.
He was a world traveler, and, along with his wife, they gladly provided slideshows to many area groups.
Surviving besides his wife are three children, Howard (Jodi) Blumenthal of Bradford, Pa., Michael (Darlene Goetzman) Blumenthal of Allegany and Amy (Julio) Alvarez-Perez, M.D., of Buffalo; five grandchildren, Abigail, Aaron, Alex, Nando and Chris; one sister, Vivian Danziger of Queens; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to a visitation from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday (Feb. 16, 2013) at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean. Funeral and committal services will begin at noon, with the Rev. William Allen and the Rev. Kristen Allen, co-pastors of Christ United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will continue to receive friends at a reception following the service at Christ United Methodist Church, beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will then follow in Mount View Cemetery, Olean.
