Paul T. Schafer(1935-2014)

OLEAN - Paul T. "Sonny" Schafer, of Olean, passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Sunday (Feb. 23, 2014) at the Olean General Hospital.
He was born March 25, 1935, in Olean, a son of the late Paul J. and Ann L. York Schafer. Sonny was a graduate of Olean High School and St. Bonaventure University. He served with the U.S. Marines at the end of the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, serving as an usher on Saturdays at the 4 p.m. Mass for many years. Sonny was a member of the VFW Post 1619, Olean American Legion Post 530 and Knights of Columbus No. 338. He was an avid walker in the city. He owned and operated Schafer Vending for many years, and later owned True Value.
Surviving are a son, Scott (Courtenay) Schafer of Amherst; a daughter, Lisa (Dave) Butchello of Williamsburg, Va.; five grandchildren, Dominic Butchello of Brooklyn, Gia Butchello of Williamsburg, Joseph Butchello of Williamsburg, Erin Schafer of Amherst and Eric Schafer of Amherst; three sisters, Miriam E. Kingston of Fairport, Nancy C. Schafer Tamutus of Cuba and Kathryn Schafer of Olean; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Patricia Ann Valachos, Sandra Lee Anderson and Julie M. Schafer; and a brother, Thomas W. "Pete" Schafer.
Family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Guenther Funeral Home Inc. 1303 E. State St., Olean. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 27, 2014), in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Father Gregory Dobson, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery Allegany. A Scripture wake service will be held in the funeral home tonight at evening at 8 p.m.
