Robert L. "Bob" Thompson(1939-2013)

SAMALANCA - Robert "Bob" L. Thompson, age 73, of Waite Avenue, died peacefully Thursday evening (Jan. 4, 2013) at Olean General Hospital following a short illness.
He was born March 19, 1939, in Palmyra, a son of the late Elmer and Mildred McArthur Thompson. On July 8, 1995, at the United Congregational Methodist Church, he was married to the former Mary Davis, who survives.
Mr. Thompson was a veteran serving with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester.
Mr. Thompson had worked several years as a draftsman for Xerox Corp. and eventually operated his own drafting business. Locally, he had worked for the Seneca Nation Housing Authority as director of projects, as City of Salamanca building inspector and as the tax assessor for the City of Salamanca. He worked for Green Thumb at Allegany State Park and worked with the U.S. Census Bureau.
His strong work ethic, love of the great outdoors and his active life made an impression on all those he met.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Colleen (Troy) Dupuis and Nicole (Andrea Tillinghast) Thompson; four sons, Gregory Galvin, Thomas (Maureen Latham) Thompson, David Thompson and James (Christina Ostberg) Thompson; two step-daughters, Jennifer (Phil) Habib and Corinne (Josh) Fannon; nine grandchildren, Asher Thompson, Thomas Johnson, Cooper Thompson, Molly Thompson, Tyce Thompson, Wyatt Thompson, Lucy Thompson, Troy Habib and Nathan Habib.
He was predeceased by a son, Patrick Thompson, and two brothers, Wesley Thompson and Roy Thompson.
A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held Thursday (Dec. 10, 2013) at 1 p.m. in the United Congregational Methodist Church with pastor Joshua Schallert officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca.
Full military honors will be conducted by members of the American Legion Hughes Skiba Post No. 535 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post No. 5296.
