OLEAN - S. Dennis Aiello, of Stardust Lane, Olean, passed away Friday (March 14, 2014), at Olean General Hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1923, in Olean, the son of the late Peter and Rose Vittalli Aiello. On June 4, 1949, in St. John's Church, he married the former Thomasina Bianco, who survives.
Dennis was a graduate of Olean High School class of 1942 and a member of its football team. A veteran of World War II
, he was a sergeant with the U.S. Army
serving under General Patton in the Ardennes and Rhineland in the European Theater. After the war he worked at the Silver Slipper Restaurant and later at the Olean Beer Supply Co. as a salesman until his retirement in 1965. Dennis loved golfing and was a Ranger at the St. Bonaventure Golf Club for many years.
He was a member of St. John's Church and longtime member of the Knights of Columbus #338 serving as Grand Knight five times, past business manager, various activities chairman, club committees and other club offices.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by two sons, Peter Aiello of Denver, Colo., and Thomas (Patricia) Aiello of Bridgewater, Mass.; four grandchildren, Domenic Aiello and Gina Aiello, both of Denver, Mary (Christopher) Jones of Raynham, Mass., and Andrew Aiello of Bridgewater, Mass.; two great-grandsons; a sister, Philomena Aiello of Allegany; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, John, and Richard Aiello.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday (March 17, 2014), at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc. 1303 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (March 18, 2014), beginning with a prayer service in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church. Father Edward Sheedy, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. A Scripture Wake service will be held in the funeral home at 4 p.m. Monday.
