OLEAN - William G. Smith of 1010 Washington St., Olean, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 4, 2013) surrounded by his family in the Olean General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Nov. 23, 1950, in Olean, he was a son of the late former Olean mayor, William O. and Catherine Ann Gill Smith.
Bill was a graduate of Archbishop Walsh High School. He attended St. Leo's College and graduated from Gannon University with a bachelor's degree and from St. Bonaventure University with a master's degree. He was director of vocational rehabilitation at the ReHabilitation Center in Olean for 23 years until his retirement.
He was a city of Olean alderman from 1990 through 1995 and president of the Olean Common Council from 1992 to 1993. Bill was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and a member of the Birch Run Country Club, where he was honored for making a hole-in-one.
Surviving are his children, Jennifer (Scott) Stackhouse of Herndon, Va., Jeffrey W. Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Julie E. Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two grandchildren, Ethan and Andrew Stackhouse; a brother, Richard C. (Peggy) Smith of Olean; sisters, Kathleen Fogarty of Elmira and Cherlynne Smith of Olean; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Bernard Patrick Smith.
Family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held Saturday (Sept. 7, 2013), beginning with a prayer service in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. and followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Father Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
A scripture wake service will be held in the funeral home this evening at 8:30 p.m.
