ALLEGANY - Amy P. Hellier, of 3560 Five Mile Road, passed away Saturday (Sept. 1, 2012) at Absolut Care of Allegany after a long illness.
Born Dec. 8, 1938, in Havertown, Pa., she was the daughter of Edward A. and Amy A. Shoemaker Phillips. On June 17, 1967, in Havertown, she married E. Peter Hellier, who survives.
Mrs. Hellier attended Haverford Township High School, where she was selected to perform with the Philadelphia Junior Philharmonic Orchestra as a cello player. Her love of music continued after her graduation from West Chester (Pa.) State Teachers College, now West Chester University. She taught elementary music and string instruments for the Springfield Township, Delaware County, school system.
She and her husband moved to Allegany in 1977, and she continued to raise her children until time allowed her to resume her love of learning. She studied math and science courses, including calculus, at Jamestown Community College in Olean, during which she provided student-on-student tutoring.
She was drawn to serve others by volunteering for the ReHabilitation Center's governing board, where she appreciated the loving care shown by the staff toward her disabled daughter, Becky. During those years in Allegany, she and her husband ran a farm on the Five Mile Road and co-ran Allegany's community soccer program. She was a natural sports enthusiast, and in the 1960s, along with her husband, she participated in the whitewater racing circuit's two-person team. Again with her husband, she was a member of the Ski Wing ski patrol, loved adventure and travel and enjoyed participating in the Square Dance Club, which covered the Western New York territory.
Surviving besides her husband are one son, Jeffrey Hellier of Olean; one grandson, Logan Hellier; and one brother, Edward (Karen) Phillips of Grinnell, Iowa.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Rebecca A. Hellier, on June 30, 2000.
At Mrs. Hellier's request, burial services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to the Rebecca Ann Hellier Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o The ReHabilitation Center, 1439 Buffalo St., Olean, NY 14760. Online condolences may be expressed at www.oleanfuneralhome.com.
