CONCORD, N.C. - Gladys E. (Glady) Burgess, of 334 Pitts School Road, Northwest Concord, N.C., passed away Thursday (Nov. 21, 2013), at Tucker Hospice House of Cabarrus County in Kannapolis, N.C., surrounded by her family.

She was born Jan. 23, 1938, in Harmonsville, Pa., the daughter of Jesse and Sadie (Staup) O'Shell. On Oct. 18, 1958, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, she married Joseph E. Burgess, who survives.
She was a graduate of Bradford Area High School and completed her studies in nutrition and dietary management at the University of Pittsburgh, and Indiana University. She retired from White Oak Manor of Charlotte, N.C., in 2000.
Surviving besides her husband of 55 years are two daughters, Julie (Kenneth) Zalewski of Little Valley and Shelley McAbee of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Gregg Burgess of Mooresville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Lari-Taylor McAbee and Alexander Burgers, all of Charlotte, N.C. Also surviving are a sister, Gerri Herzog of Bradford, Pa.; and a brother, Robert (Sarah) O'Shell of St. Augustine, Fla.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by two sisters, Loise O'Shell and Betty R. Jones; a brother Jesse O'Shell; and a niece, Terrie Lyn Tenison.
Private service are being held by the immediate family at their convenience. There is no visitation at her request. Funeral arrangements are under the entrusted to the Ladys Funeral Home and Crematory of Kannapolis, N.C.
In place of memorials, she has asked for extra prayers for her family.
