Born March 16, 1910, in Allegany, Grace was raised on a dairy farm, which she fervently believed to be the best education available.
She graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1929 and joined her sister Mary in Endicott, where they both taught school in the Union Endicott school system. Grace taught fourth grade for many years and retired in 1979. At her retirement dinner, she received two suitcases that traveled with her to every cathedral and church on every continent except Antarctica for the next 25 years. She took her last international trip at age 95 when she and her 97-year-old sister, Mary, traveled to their ancestral village in Belgium.
Grace was a tireless volunteer in the Endicott community devoting her time to many causes, including the Ideal Senior Living Center, the Retired Teachers Association and St. Ambrose parish, where she was a devoted parishioner for 84 years.
Grace is survived by a sister, Mary Martiny Spencer, who resides at Ideal Senior Living Center in Endicott; six loving and grateful children and their families, Patricia (Fran) Angeline of Endicott, Michael L. (Catherine) Hanley of Milan, Edward J. (Katherine) Hanley of Reston, Va., George T. (Roseanne) Hanley of East Hanover, N.J., Mary F. (Eric Savader) Hanley of West Chester, Pa., and Jerome P. (Angela Bevilacqua) Hanley of West Chester; 14 wonderful grandchildren and their spouses; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Loftus L. Hanley, in 1978; a son, John Patrick; and eight of her nine siblings.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday (May 13, 2013) in the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels of Western Broom County, www.mealsonwheelsofwesternbroomcounty.org; or Mom's House, which provides support and free child care to low-income single parents wishing to continue their education, 770 Harry L.
