ULYSSES, Pa. - Jean Carpenter, 96, of Ulysses, died Thursday (Aug. 29, 2013), in her home.

Born Dec. 7, 1916, in Elmira, N.Y., she was a daughter of Harry J. and Margaret E. Field McClelland. On April 12, 1946, in Ulysses, she married Lowell S. Carpenter, who predeceased her in 1984.
A graduate of Mansfield State Teachers College and Cornell University, she did graduate work at Penn State University. She was a mathematics, Latin, and French teacher in the Northern Potter School District for 26 years, retiring in 1976.
Jean was a member of the Ulysses First Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, and served as a volunteer at Cole Memorial Hospital and Sweden Valley Manor.
Surviving are a son, William A. Carpenter of Ulysses; a daughter, Ruth (Gale) Sprague of Bath, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Ryan Sprague, Farrell Sprague, and Tim (Laura) Sprague; three great-grandchildren, Ava, Gwen, and Gavin; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Arthur McClelland.
There will be no public visitation. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 3, 2013) at the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses. The Rev. Jason K. Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tri-Town Volunteer Ambulance or the Tri-Town Volunteer Fire Company, Ulysses, PA, 16948.
