SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. - Jim Hughey, a loving and supportive husband, father and friend, passed away in his sleep at his home in South Pasadena on Sunday (June 8, 2014). He was 52 years old.

Jim was born to James and Janet Hughey on Dec. 31,1961. He was the youngest of their four children. Jim grew up in Olean, N.Y., and graduated from Olean High School in 1980. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where he received a bachelor's degree in accounting. Upon graduation, he worked for IBM in Owego, N.Y., where he met his beloved wife Shelly Freedenthal. After receiving his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990, Jim and Shelly moved to California, where they were married on a beautiful beach in Malibu on Oct.6, 1991.

Jim and Shelly's wedding song was "Happy Together" by the Turtles. This wedding song easily could have served as the future background to a never-ending montage of blessed, unforgettable moments as Jim and Shelly moved to Glendale, welcomed their three children into the world, and ultimately settled into family, work, Temple and community life in South Pasadena.

Jim joined Walt Disney Imagineering's finance department in July 1990. He stayed with Disney until his passing, rising to the level of director and ultimately supporting the research and development team as a valued financial advisor.

If it takes a village to raise a child, the Hughey home would be the hub of that village. The blue home on the corner of Oak and Diamond streets is a special house where everyone feels welcome. Everyday neighborhood kids hang out at the Hugheys'. It is the place where one mother drops her child off early before school and another mother picks her child up late after work, where kids play basketball in the driveway and work out in the garage, and everyone enjoys the antics of the family's three rescue dogs. The Hughey house is where love and laughter rise to meet you. Jim Hughey has been an integral part of that warmth and love.

Jim lived a vibrant, active and above all, joyous life. He was known and loved by all for his casual charm and kind, loving ways. Jim was easy to be with and had a great sense of humor, and he took great care of all those around him. He was a very hands-on dad in his children's lives, ever-present at their football, basketball, baseball, soccer and water polo games. He was a Boy Scout leader and an AYSO referee for many years. He loved golf, hiking and reading history books. Although he was not Jewish, Jim was an active member of Temple Sinai of Glendale where he helped in many ways and actively supported his children's Jewish education.

Jim's life is one to be cherished and emulated. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, son-in-law and true friend who will be terribly missed.

Jim is survived by his wife of 22 years, Shelly Freedenthal; his three children, David, Sarah and Jonathan; his sisters, Ellen Reynolds (David) and Denise Personius (Ralph); his brother, Paul Hughey; his in-laws Carol and Beverly Freedenthal, Robyn and Billy Galerston, and Stacey Freedenthal and Pete Gutierrez; his niece, Madison Galerston; and his nephews, Cory Wurtenberg, Ian Gutierrez and Kyle Galerston.

A memorial will be held to honor and remember the life of Jim Hughey at 10 a.m. Monday (June 16, 2014) at Mt. Sinai Simi Valley, 6150 Mount Sinai Drive, Simi Valley. Interment will be private.
