ISCHUA - Joe N. Ames of Mill Street died Tuesday (March 3, 2014) at Olean General Hospital following a brief illness.
Born on Feb. 28, 1929, in Franklinville, he was a son of Nelson and Mildred Adams Ames. On April 14, 1949, in Franklinville, he married Sue Rogers, who predeceased him Nov., 22, 2011. On June 16, 1978, in the Baptist Church of Olean, he married Sharon Dake Colley, who survives.
Mr. Ames was a 1947 graduate of Ten Broeck Academy, Franklinville. He was employed from 1950 to 1991 at Clark Bros. (Dresser-Rand) of Olean.
Joe was an active member of the Ischua Volunteer Fire Department for 51 years, where he was a past fire chief, fire commissioner and bingo manager. He served on the Ischua Town Board and was a member of the Ischua Union Church.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being a sports spectator who loved the Buffalo Bills.
Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, JoAnn (Mickey) Viglietta of Florida, Joelle Hyson of Olean and Vicky (Wayne) Meyers of Cuba; three sons, John (Nancy) Ames of Ischua, Oakley Colley of Mount Jewett, Pa., and Michael (Sandy) Colley of Connecticut; 18 grandchildren, Johnathan, Courtney, Cameron, Kelsey, Melissa, Katy, Brian, Tara, Michael, Ashley, Joshua, Jami, Brandy, Pagge, Blair, Isacc, Jillian and Shane; 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Ames.
Friends may gather with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Babbitt and Easton Funeral Home, 7 N. Main St., Franklinville. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday (March 8, 2014) in the funeral home. The Rev. Steven Beattie of the United Pentecostal Church of Olean will officiate. Burial will be in Hinsdale Cemetery.
