LAKELAND, Fla. - John William "Bill" Higby of 2501 Cresap St. went home to Heaven on Saturday (March 1, 2014) after a long illness.

Born on May 27, 1934, in Cattaraugus County, N.Y., he was a son of the late Leon and Helen Higby. On Aug. 18, 1956, in West Clarksville, N.Y., he married Crystal A. Wilkins, who survives. He attended Richburg School.
Bill worked for many years as a truck driver and construction worker. He owned Higby's Home Services for several years before retiring in 2007.
He attended K-ville Assembly of God in Auburndale, Fla., and United Church of Friendship, N.Y. He was a past member of AMVETS; VFW; and the American Legion in Cuba, N.Y.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, buying and selling at auctions and flea markets and working around his house and yard. He was also an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed stock car racing and was a driver at many tracks in the 1960s.
Surviving along with his wife are his sons, John (Cathy) Higby and Ricky Higby, both of Friendship, N.Y.; two daughters, Patricia (Terry) Crawford of Lawndale, N.C., and Tammy (Kelly) Wheaton of Lakeland, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He also had a beloved dog, Dixie.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sons, Billy, Ronald and Scott Higby; a daughter, Bonnie Higby Leasure; and a granddaughter, Brandi Higby.
He also had many beloved late pets, including Chelsea and Bandit.
There will be a celebration of life memorial service at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at at the United Church of Friendship, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory can be made to one's local SPCA.
