BOLIVAR - Mary D. Schaffner, 94, of South Main Street passed away Monday (Dec. 3, 2012) at the home of her daughter in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Born June 21, 1918, in Bolivar she was a daughter of Clayton and Mary McVey Dunning. On July 20, 1944, in Bolivar, she married Roy F. Schaffner, who predeceased her Dec. 6, 1988.
A 1936 graduate of Bolivar Central School, she received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin in 1940, then later a master's degree in education from St. Bonaventure University.
Mary started her teaching career as an elementary art teacher with the Allegany County BOCES, and she was later employed by the Bolivar Central School District, retiring after 20 years in 1976. She was also a longtime partner in the Dunning Oil Co. in Bolivar.
Mary was a member of St. Mary's Church in Bolivar and Good Shepherd Parish in Camp Hill, Pa.; the Bolivar Retired Teachers' Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma teachers' sorority.
She is survived by four children, Mary Kevin (James) Cawley of Mechanicsburg, Linda J. Consedine of Mechanicsburg, Anne (Robert) Klenke of St. John USVI and Joseph (Eileen) Schaffner of Bolivar; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son-in-law, Thomas J. Consendine; and two sisters, Teresa Swarthout and Edith Mooney.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Schaffner Funeral Home in Bolivar. A concelebrated Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (Dec. 10, 2012) at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 111 Wellsville St., Bolivar. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bolivar.
