ALLEGANY - Nicolas G. Pendl, 19, of 4284 Birch Run Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2014) at Paul Smith's College in Paul Smiths.

Born March 31, 1995, in Olean, he was the son of Peter and Mary Potter Pendl. Nicolas graduated from Allegany-Limestone High School in 2013, and was starting his second year studying forestry at Paul Smith's College in the Adirondacks.

In high school, Nicolas was senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. He was also captain of the cross-country team and was named student athlete of the month. At Paul Smith's College he was on the dean's list, and was named an Adirondack Scholar in 2013. He was proud to attend this college because his grandfather, Robert Potter, was a 1952 alumnus and had served on its board of trustees.

Nicolas was a member of the college snowshoe cross country racing team, as well as the canoe racing team. He earned the Paul Smith's College Striders Rookie of the Year award, as well as having twice been named to the USCAA All Academic Team for his snowshoe competition achievements. He was very active physically with mountain biking, soccer, freestyle skiing and running, and was a passionate fan of University of Michigan football and Formula 1 racing.

Nic loved his pet cat, Toni.

During the past few years Nicolas had worked part-time as a groundskeeper for St. Bonaventure Parish, worked for Potter Lumber Co., and most recently working for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, principally as a surveyor's assistant.

Surviving are his parents of Allegany; a sister, Bethany Pendl at home; his maternal grandmother, Mary Frances Potter of Allegany; his paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Pendl of Bethpage; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Francis X. Pendl; and his maternal grandfather Robert G. Potter.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 30, 2014) at St. Bonaventure Church. The Rev. James Vacco will officiate, assisted by Nicolas' uncle, the Rev. Michael Catanzaro. Private burial services will be held in Allegany Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Francis X. Pendl Nassau County Firefighters Museum, 1 Davis Ave. Garden City, NY 11530; or to Paul Smith's College Endowed Alumni Scholarship, C/O Office of College Advancement, Paul Smith's College, PO Box 265, Paul Smiths, NY 12970.
