Dick was born on June 11, 1923, in Smethport, Pa. At the end of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and then as a truck driver in the Olean area for all his career.
On June 27, 1944, Dick was united in marriage with Lela Sworts. They were long-time residents on East River Road. Lela passed away in 1994, just two months short of their 50th anniversary.
Dick was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Portville.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Young of Vallejo, Calif., Shirley (David) Susan of Madison, Wis., and Carole (Glenn) Andrus of Cuba; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Jr.; and his sister, Bertha.
Dick's family would like to thank the Veterans Administration Homecare, especially his caregiver, Annie; and his friends, Julie and George, for their care and concern in his later years. We would also like to thank the Olean General Hospital staff for their end-of-life care.
The family will receive friends Tuesday (April 15, 2014) at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, from 10 a.m. to noon, at which time a service of Christian burial will be held. The Rev. Ivy Gauvin, pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church, Portville, will officiate.
