CUBA - Samuel H. Guild, 77, of 36 Champlain Ave., passed away Sunday (Aug. 31, 2014) at Cuba Memorial Hospitals Palliative Care Program after a lengthy illness.

Born on May 10, 1937, in Cuba, he was a son of Walter and Harriet Guilford Guild. On July 26, 1956, he married the former Joanne L. Rose, who survives.

Sam was a graduate of the Cuba Central School Class of 1955. He had been employed as purchasing agent at Acme Electric Corp. of Cuba for more than 40 years, retiring in 2000.

A lifetime member of the Cuba Fire Department, he was chief from 1970 to 1972, past president, and Fireman of the Year in 1980. He was a former trustee on the Cuba village board, the Cuba Rotary Club, and the Allegany County Fire Advisory Board, where at one time he served as vice chairman.

When his children were young, he was involved in their sports, coaching little league and midget football. In his spare time, he loved tinkering in his workshop.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Gerald (Kimberly) Guild of Allegany; three grandchildren, Meghan Guild of Tempe Ariz., Paige Missel of Lexington, Va. and Alec Missel of Santa Barbara Calif.; his "borrowed" grandchildren, Meghan and Erin Bradley of Cuba; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Walter C. Guild.

Friend will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, Funeral services will be held on at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2014) with the Rev. John M. Woodring will officiating. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery.
