ALLEGANY - Bernadette M. "Bernie" Ried passed away peacefully Saturday (March 2, 2013) surrounded by her family.

Born May 1, 1920, in Port Allegany, Pa., she was a daughter of Anthony Glass and Cecilia Margaret Connolly Glass. She married Charles A. Ried on March 6, 1943.
Bernie graduated from Port Allegany High School and St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse and worked for many years at St. Francis Hospital. Bernie was one of the founding members of the Cattaraugus County Association for the Help of Retarded Citizens, an organization which has evolved into the ReHabilitation Center. She served on the guardianship committee at the ReHabilitation Center. Bernie helped create and run Camp Cornplanter, a summer camp for children with developmental disabilities. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church.
Bernie's legacy lives on in the remarkable lives of her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Sandra Ried (Sam Swan) of Albany, Calif., Joan (Doug) Martin of Monument, Colo., David (Ann) Ried of Olean, James (Juanita) Ried of Allegany, Kathy Ried (Rohn Brown) of Tuscon, Ariz., Peg (Dana) Frederic of Pinole, Calif., Barbara Ried of Olean, Betsy Ried of Aurora, Colo., Greg (Rhonda) Ried of Buffalo, and Dr. Christopher Ried (Johnny Torigoe) of West Hollywood, Calif.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Charles, and her brother, Thomas Glass.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Guenther Funeral Home, 1303 E. State St., Olean. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday (March 7, 2013) at St. Bonaventure Church. The Rev. James Vacco, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ReHabilitation Foundation, 1439 Buffalo St., Olean, NY 14760.
