ALLEGANY - Sister Catherine Sushil, O.S.F., passed away Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2012) at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany.

Born Margaret Elizabeth Sushil on Jan. 15, 1933, she was a daughter of Gerald and Agnes Molter Sushil of Fort Myers, Fla.
She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Aug. 15, 1953, and professed her final religious vows on Aug. 16, 1960. Sister Catherine faithfully lived the mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for over 59 years.
She attended grade school at Sanibel Island, Fla., and St. Francis Xavier in Fort Myers, Fla. from 1939 to 1947. She graduated from Fort Myers High School in 1950. Sister Catherine earned her bachelor's degree in education from St. Elizabeth Teacher's College, now known as St. Bonaventure University, in 1968. In 1975, she earned a master's degree in education from Cortland State University in Cortland.
She ministered in the field of education, with the early years committed to religious education classes for younger students. During this period she also held the positions of principal and vice principal at several schools within the congregation in New Jersey and Florida. Sister Sushil's last 24 years in education were spent at St. Francis Xavier High School in Fort Myers, Fla. While there, she taught social studies and language arts to junior high students, served as National Junior Honor Society adviser and later became involved in the school's administration.
In 2005, Sister retired to St. Elizabeth convent in Tampa, Fla., and was welcomed home to the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse community in Allegany in 2007.
Sister Sushil was predeceased by her parents; brother, Gerald; and sister, Laura Burke.
She is survived by sisters, Rita Wolfe and Kathryn Meyer; and a brother, Kenneth Sushil; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.
A wake service is scheduled for Monday at 6:30 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Mother House, Allegany. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2012) at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean.
