CHEPACHET, R.I. - A memorial Mass for Leonard ""Lex"" Kurlej, of 15 Long Entry Road, Chepachet, formerly of Salamanca, N.Y., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 20, 2012) at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Salamanca, with the Rev. Patrick Melfi, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, N.Y. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca.
CHEPACHET, R.I. - Leonard F. "Lex" Kurlej, 85, of 15 Long Entry Road, Chepachet, and formerly of Salamanca, N.Y., died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2012) at the Overlook Nursing Home of Pascoag, R.I. Born Sept. 3, 1927, in Salamanca, he was a son of the late Joseph and Sophia Skrzypczak Kurlej. He was married on Jan. 7, 1955, in Little Valley, N.Y., to the former Jo Ann Rodgers, who survives. Mr. Kurlej was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1945 through 1953 during both World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He was employed as a furniture maker at the former Fancher Furniture in Salamanca and as a bridge repairman for the New York State Department of Transportation in Little Valley prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Holy Cross Athletic Club and the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Alexis (Michael) Heller of Chepachet; four grandchildren, Alyssa Heller of Scituate, Kristina Heller of Woburn, Mass., Aaron Heller of Schoharie, N.Y., and Alexander Heller of Chepachet; a sister, Patricia (Ronald) LeBlanc of Salamanca; a brother, Stanley (Gerri) Kurlej of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Kohaniec, Theresa Paciorkowski and Mary Kurlej; and a brother, John Kurlej. Friends may attend a memorial Mass in Our Lady of Peace Parish on Saturday (Oct. 20, 2012) at a time to be announced. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, N.Y. Full military honors will be conducted by the members of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post 5296.
