ALLEGANY - Sister Madelyn Francis Portanova, OSF, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2012) at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany.
She was born Lucy Agnes Portanova on Jan. 3, 1912, in Cambridge, Mass. She was a daughter of Leonard and Madeline LoTrecchiano Portanova of Cambridge.
Sister Madelyn Francis was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany on Aug. 15, 1940, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. She professed her final religious vows Aug. 16, 1947. Sister Madelyn Francis faithfully lived the mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for more than 70 years.
She attended Willard elementary school in Cambridge from 1917 to 1925 and attended Latin school in 1929. She had an early interest in business administration and successfully completed the general business curriculum at Bryant and Stratton Business College of Boston.
Throughout her Franciscan life, Sister Madelyn Francis ministered in the administrative field in several hospitals of the congregation in Florida and Massachusetts. She also served terms as councilor, secretary-treasurer and local minister within the congregation.
Sister Madelyn dearly loved her large family and, in later years, ministered as caregiver where needed. She retired in 1996 to Tampa Bay, Fla., where she enjoyed the companionship of her sisters at the St. Clare and St. Elizabeth convents. In 2006, she was welcomed home to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany.
Sister Madelyn Francis is survived by several beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Joseph, William, Michael, Anthony, Salvatore, John, Donato and Gaetano; and sisters, Philomena, Rose, Letitia and Mary.
A wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday (Oct. 8, 2012) in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial will follow at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean.
