EL PASO, Texas - Marcia Lathrop Barry, formerly of Olean, died Thursday, April 24,
2014, in El Paso after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 17, 1930, in Olean, N.Y., to Myra Brainard Lathrop and Fredrick
Richard Lathrop. She grew up on King Street, where she attended School 4 and later graduated
from Olean High School in 1948.
After graduation, she worked as a switchboard operator for the phone company before
taking a job as a secretary at Messer Oil Corp. In 1951, she married William David Barry.
Together they had five children.
Marcia was an avid musician, a prolific painter and an active member in the Olean art
community. She loved to sing and play the piano, and she taught her children to play, including
her son, Kevin, who went on to become a professional musician.
She was a longtime member of the Bartlett Country Club. Marcia also served as
president of Barry Resources, Inc. an oil & gas company she and her husband founded after he
retired from Messer Oil.
She will best be remembered for her joie de vivre, her sense of humor and her ability to
turn any situation into a party. She was very proud of her family and was a wonderful mother.
She is survived by four children and their families, Kathleen Barry Carvill of El Paso,
William Patrick Barry of Savannah, Ga., Paul Vincent Barry of North Bend, Wash., and Kevin
Christopher Barry of Natick, Mass. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. As a lifelong resident of Olean, Marcia leaves behind a group of very dear
friends that were in every respect an important part of her "family."
Her eldest son, Michael John Barry, died in 2012 of ALS.
Marcia Barry will be interred in St. Bonaventure Cemetery next to her husband. There will
be a memorial service at noon Saturday, May 17, 2014, at St. John's Roman Catholic Church. A
reception will follow at 2 p.m. at Old Library Events, 116 S. Union St., Olean
