OLEAN - Mary Jane Cheladyn, formerly of Dugan Road, passed away Thursday (Oct. 10, 2013) at her home following an illness.

Mary Jane was born on March 12, 1929, in Olean, and was a daughter of Clyde and Catherine Keller Bailey. On May 20, 1950, in St. Mary of the Angels Church, she married her husband of 57 years, Nick Cheladyn, who predeceased her on March 31, 2007.

Mary was a 1947 graduate of Allegany High School. She held a number of part-time positions, including Charlie Ried's Grocery Store and WT Grants. She and her husband lived in Florida for about 10 years after he retired, and moved back around 1996.

Mary loved knitting, crocheting, reading - particularly Amish books - and taking long rides in the car. She also enjoyed having lunch with her granddaughters at Red's and Trudy's Restaurant in Portville and talking on the phone. In her younger years, she will be remembered as an active person who enjoyed entertaining, camping, driving stock cars and even driving her own motorcycle, which she bought after retiring. Mary was a former member of the Westons Mills Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Deborah A. (Douglas) Pelton of Olean; a son, Michael F. (Jamie Coleman) Cheladyn of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Edward (Rebecca) Cleveland, Megan N. Pelton, Natalie E. Pelton, Kelly A. (Gary) Bock, Kristin A. (David) Clough and Kari A. (Charlie) Pelton-Moore; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Milton F. (Christine) Bailey of Grass Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Florence (Michael) Glover of Olean and Patricia Carpenter of Buffalo; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Sally Minihan.

As per the family's request, visitation and funeral services will be private. The Rev. Suzanne M. Block, pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor with her husband, Nick.
