Patricia M. "Patty" McCarthy

ALLEGANY - Patricia M. "Patty" "Nana" (Stavish) McCarthy, 86, of Emerald Hills Estates, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23, 2017), after a lengthy illness, at the Pines and Health and Rehabilitation Center in Olean.

Born June 7, 1931, she was the daughter of Mary Stavish Ackerman. On Nov. 19, 1949, she married Eugene "Big Mac" McCarthy, who predeceased her on Oct. 17, 1986.

Patty was a 1949 graduate of Olean High School. She was an active member of the OHS Alumni Association and was always looking forward to the reunion in June.

She worked at Tops Markets in Olean and was the nanny for the Wittmeyer's Family for 18 years. Patty was a housekeeper for the Rev. Francis Zmozynski for many years; and ran the Pulaski Club with her husband "Big Mac" for 13 years before he became too ill to continue. Her greatest joy was working for the family business, Cindy's Craft Co-Op in the Olean Center Mall.

She was a graduate of Transfiguration School in 1945 and a member of the Transfiguration Church, until its closing. While a member of the Transfiguration Church, she was on the Rosary Society. Patty was a current member of St. Bonaventure Parish.
She was a Lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Pulaski Club and the St. Stephens' Club. She was also a member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), and in 2014 met her weight loss goal and was crowned queen in Saratoga Springs.

Patty enjoyed making floral arrangements, especially for weddings. She also enjoyed Swedish weaving, making several afghans for her friends and family.

Surviving are four children, Linda Minnemeyer, Cindy (late Larry) Fox and Mary V. McCarthy, all of Olean, and James P. (Mary Lynn) McCarthy of Grayson, Ga.; six grandchildren, Teri Lynn Minnemeyer of Melbourne, Australia, Kristen (Scott) Bradshaw and Laura (David) Berry, both of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Patrick, Anna and Caleb McCarthy of Grayson; five great-grandchildren, twin boys Parker and Logan Bradshaw, Lincoln Bradshaw, Sadie and Clara Berry, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; a sister, Susan (Paul) Jurenko of Olean; three sisters-in-law, Mary (late Chuck) Neff of Olean, Deanna (late Don) McCarthy of Allegany and Ann (late Doug) Morris of Elma; a brother-in-law, Christopher (Jay) McCarthy of Placentia, Calif.; Aunt Barbara (late John) Wozniak of Cheektowaga; close friends whom she considered family Ed Monroe, The Wittmeyer's Michael, Carol, Mike and Christine, Jan Carl (Her hairstylist for 50 plus years), Kim Leonard (her health care nurse), LaDorna Fox, her TOPS club sisters and the Craft Co-Op family.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her mom; and a sister, JoAnn Ackerman.

Friends will be received at the St. Bonaventure Parish, 95 E. Main Street, Allegany on Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2017) from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at which time a Mass of Christian burial will promptly start. The Rev. James Vacco, OFM, will be the celebrant. Private burial services will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State Street, Olean.
