Olean - Signe H. Johnson, 100, of Olean, died Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2012) at Cuba Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born June 2, 1912, in Portville, she was a daughter of Peter L. and Teresia Lidback Johnson.
She was a graduate of Portville High School, Class of 1930. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at the University of Michigan. She also earned post-graduate credit from Northwestern, St. Bonaventure and Temple universities and SUNY Potsdam. She taught English at Portville High School for 13 years and at Olean High School from 1950 to 1972 until her retirement.
Miss Johnson was a life member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Portville; a member of Pi Lambda Theta, a national honor fraternity for women in education; a member of the Portville Alumni Association and a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
She has no surviving immediate family members.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, Harry, Nelson, Leonard and Lawrence; and three sisters, Svenborg, Agnes and Selma.
There will be no visitation. Graveside services of ashes will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 8, 2012) at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Ivy Gauvin, pastor of the Bethel Lutheran Church, will officiate.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Portville Bethel Lutheran Church, 79 Brooklyn St., Portville; Chestnut Hill Cemetery; or the Salvation Army, 502 N. Union St., Olean.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home.
