HARRISONBURG, Va. - William "Bill" Butcher, 55, died Thursday (June 19, 2014) at his home in Harrisonburg following a lengthy illness.

The son of the late William F. Butcher and Janice Guthrie Venable, he was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Philippi, W.Va. Raised in Olean, N.Y., Bill had been a member of Olean First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Olean High School. Prior to becoming ill, he was a longtime employee of Star Heating and Cooling of Harrisonburg, as well as an active member of the Massanutten Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia.
Also preceding Bill in death are his stepfathers, Victor Guthrie and Paul Venable; and a brother, Robert "Bob" Guthrie of Olean and Allegany, N.Y.
He is survived by brother, Ron Guthrie of Huntsville, Ala.; niece, Stephanie Guthrie of Allegany; a nephew, Jeremy Guthrie of Allegany; a stepmother, Betty Butcher of Harrisonburg; and numerous step-relations in the Venable and Butcher families.
Bill is remembered for a surprising wit, recurring optimism and a late-in-life love of family.
