LITTLE GENESEE - Joseph "Joe" Harvey Hicks Jr. passed away Friday (Feb. 21, 2014) at Olean General Hospital after a short illness.
Joe was born Nov. 17, 1959, in Olean. Joe was an avid hunter, outdoorsman and craftsman. He loved wood burning and was self-employed in the construction industry. Joe grew up in Chautauqua County, but spent time in Virginia and Western New York. Joe loved to build and ride motorcycles. He enjoyed the freedom of the open road and loved to spend time with family and friends celebrating life under the stars with campfires and music. Joe was a collector of many things, including Harley-Davidson paraphernalia, Indians, wolves, eagles and NASCAR (Dale Earndhart Sr. and Jr). He was a member of the Olean American Legion Post 530 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Olean.
He is survived by beloved wife, Diane M. (Emules) Hicks, whom he married Dec. 23, 1997; children, Hilary (Hicks) Hohnsbehn of Ellerbe, N.C., Mark Waite of Jamestown, Joanna Holland of Jamestown, Robert "Bobby" Holland of Jamestown, Michelle Crandall of Bolivar; and Audrey Bagley of Luray, Va.; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and one expected; four brothers, Wilford Hicks of Olean, Brian (Angela) Hicks of Bolivar, Daryl (Holly) Hicks of Olean and Quinton (Tim) Hicks of Olean; four sisters, Marcy (Jacob) Sweeney of Mesa, Ariz., Faith Hicks of Olean, Hope (Randy) Dinkinsof Frewsburg and Cheryl (Darrell) Kellogg of Cuba; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents Joseph Harvey Hicks Sr. and Shirley Louise Vaughn Hicks; and brother, Clyde Phillip "Buzzy" Hicks.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2014) at Casey Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 State Route 417 W., Olean. Viewing for family and friends will begin at noon with services at 1 p.m., and will be officiated by the Rev. Roger Howell of Scio. A celebration lunch will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 116 West Sullivan St., Olean, immediately following.
