ALLEGANY - June A. Hendy of Allegany passed away Saturday (March 1, 2014) in the Cuba Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

Born on June 1, 1919, in Olean, she was a daughter of Lyle E. and Cloa Clark Ames. On Aug. 2, 1941, in the Olean Wesleyan Methodist Church, she married Richard F. Hendy, who predeceased her April 10, 1993.
June was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1937. Following graduation, she was employed for five years as a secretary in the Olean High School. After raising her family, she returned to the same school and worked as a secretary in the guidance office until her retirement in 1982. June was a member of Hillside Wesleyan Church in Olean for more than 70 years. She taught Sunday School, Children's Church, Vacation Bible School and Wednesday Release Time Classes. She had a heart for missions and was active in the Women's Missionary Society. She often represented Hillside as a delegate to the annual Wesleyan Church conference. June was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her bright smile, kind and gentle manner and faith in the Lord touched all who knew her.
Surviving are a son, Richard A. Hendy; two daughters, Kathleen (Stephen) Abrams and Ruth (Richard) Flood, both of Allegany; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Wolfe, Richard C. Hendy, Levon Hendy, Lyle Hendy, Richele (Michael) Anastasia, David Abrams, Anne Abrams, Evan (Tara) Flood, Elliot Flood and Claudia Flood; four great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter. Also surviving are a sister, Pauline Glenn of Olean; a sister-in-law, Louanne Ames of Memphis, Tenn.; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, June was predeceased by a sister, Jeanette Ames; and two brothers, Vernon C. Ames and L. Frederick Ames.
Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean, where funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (March 8, 2014). The Rev. Richard Long, pastor of Hillside Wesleyan Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
