OLEAN - John J. Fonseca, of 72 Martha Ave., passed away Sunday (March 23, 2014) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Buffalo after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 3, 1946, in Catano, Puerto Rico. On Feb. 15, 1969, in Olean, he married the former Linda Ann Ouderkirk, who survives.
John graduated from the Warwick Academy Class of 1963. He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from June 24, 1964, to Nov. 6, 1967. He worked for Columbia Gas, now NYSEG, until 1993, retiring due to his health.
He was a member of the American Disabled Veterans and a past member of the Olean American Legion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stephen Fonseca of Olean and Gregory (Charisse Smith) Fonseca of Campbell; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Fonseca of Cuba, twins Matthew Fonseca and Amber Fonseca, both of Olean, Gabrielle N. Fonseca of the USAF Lakeland Air Force Base, Texas, and Bryonna E. Fonseca, Dawne M. Fonseca and Alan John Fonseca, all of Campbell; a sister, Elise Rivera of Newburgh; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph and Angelo Fonseca.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday (March 27, 2014) at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean, at which time funeral and committal services will be held. The Rev. Chuck Maine will officiate. Burial will be in Veteran Field of Honor, Mount View Cemetery, Olean.
