OLEAN - Gregory J. Herring, 59 of the Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Olean, passed away Monday (April 14, 2014), after a long battle with cancer. Despite a lifetime physical challenges with spina bifida and more recently cancer, he maintained his humor and good attitude.

Born on July 29, 1954, in Cuba, the son of Robert L. and Laura I. (Earll) Herring. He was raised in Friendship, and has resided in Olean for the past several years.
Greg was a 1973 graduate of Friendship Central School, and attended Jamestown Community College Cattaraugus County Campus. While in Friendship, he was involved in town team baseball, helping with statistics and managing. Greg also served as a literacy volunteer for Friendship Central School. Greg's passions were reading, particularly American history and sports, coin collecting, listening to music, bird watching and following his teams. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills, Sabres and the Chicago Cubs. His family and friends were important to him and he enjoyed them.
He is survived by a sister, Mereda Shelley (Lindsey) of Randolph; a brother, Roderick Herring (Colette) of Henrietta; his nephews, Justin Shelley of Seattle Wash., Erick Shelley of Cleveland Ohio, and Samantha Herring of Pittsford.
He was predeceased by his parents.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday (May 23, 2014), at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, with friends being received at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dennis Durfee will officiate.
