OLEAN - Merle Green Sr., 69, of Eden Heights, died Tuesday (April 15, 2014) at the Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center
Born on Aug. 2, 1944, in Franklinville, he was a son of the late Simeon and Margaret Ackerman Green. He was married to the former Jean Louise Brown, who predeceased him.
Mr. Green was a graduate of Randolph High School. He was veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with Company D, 5th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment and the 197th Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Mr. Green was formerly employed at Crescent Tools in Jamestown, Protool in Jamestown, Fitzpatrick & Weller in Ellicottville and Dahlstrom & Blackstone in Jamestown.
He was a member of Senior Total Care. He enjoyed bingo, the coffee house and Langworthy's. He loved going out to eat and music.
Surviving are a son, Scott (Danielle) Green Sr. of Kennedy; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five brothers, Howard (Doreen) Green of Franklinville, Clarence Green of Salamanca, his twin, Melvin (Virginia) Green of Ellicottville, Leon (Sharon) Green of Berkley Spring, W.Va., and Kenneth (Mary) Green of Napoli; two sisters, Diane (Melvin) Slocum of Tennessee and Ellen (Ron) Boser of Cuba; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Merle Green Jr.; a daughter, Lisa Proper; four brothers, Perry Green, Arthur Green, Walter Green and Roy Green; and three sisters, Margaret Murphy, Marianne Green and Lenna Wheeler.
Friends may call Saturday (April 19, 2014) at the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca, from 10 to 11 a.m., at which time funeral services will be held with the Rev. Charles Elwell of Valley Christian Assembly officiating. Burial will be in Mount View Field of Honor, Olean. Full military honors will be conducted by members of American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post No. 535 and Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post No. 5296.
