OLEAN - William Morton Howe, passed away peacefully Friday (April 25, 2014) after a brief illness. He was born May 22, 1931, in Angelica to Ethel M. and Ivan G. Howe.

He will be forever loved by his wife, Anne; and daughters, Beth (Robert) Green, Susan (Ed) Newman, and Janet (John) Biuso. He will always be in the hearts of his grandchildren, who loved their Poppa dearly, Matthew and Jeffery Green; Brett, Elizabeth and McKenzie Newman; and Emily, Anna and Bryan Biuso.
He is predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Barbara Maguire and Jane Peterson.
Dr. Howe graduated from Cornell University as a doctor of veterinary medicine in 1957. He married Anne, his wife of 59 years, in 1955 and started his first private practice in Wellsville in 1957. He became owner of the Olean Veterinary Clinic in 1961 and cared for his longtime clients and their pets even after retirement in 2002.
Serving his community was always a priority for Dr. Howe. His contributions are innumerable, but they include being a member of the Olean Exchange Club, board member and past president of the Center for Family Unity and school board member and past president of Hinsdale Central School District. He was committed to ongoing excellence in all areas of his life, and at the time of his death still carried a NYS license in veterinary medicine and memberships in the NYS American Veterinary Association and the American Veterinary Association. Professional contributions of Dr. Howe include being on the NYS Licensure Board, being a site examiner for the AVMA Accreditation Board and certification in Wildlife and Conservation Medicine from Tufts University.
Friends are invited to pay their respect to Dr. Howe from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday (May 3, 2014) at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. A private family memorial service will take place following calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donors consider planting a tree in memory of Morton; or giving to the Arbor Day Foundation, Joyful Rescues or the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
