OLEAN - Robert Dunn, of Crown Street, passed away Tuesday (July 22, 2014) at Absolut of Allegany after a brief illness.
Born March 25, 1924, in Auburn, he was the son of the late Edward and Arlene Fulton Dunn. On May 25, 1948, in Auburn, he married the former Esther T. Warter, who survives. Bob was a graduate of Auburn Holy Family High School in Auburn, class of 1941.
A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a first lieutenant fighter pilot with the 357th Fighter Group, 362nd Fighter Squadron. Flying a P-51 out of Leister, England, he flew 63 sorties and combat missions over Germany and France. After the war, he graduated from Indiana Technical School, Fort Wayne, Ind., with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering.
He was employed at Clark Brothers from February 1950, until his retirement in 1986 as a product design engineer. He was a member of St. John's Church and an active member of STARS Model Airplane Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jack (Nancy) Dunn of Peoria, Ill., Peg (Jim) Colosimo, Tucson, Ariz., Tom (Susan) Dunn, Livonia, Mich., Eileen (Larry) Jonak of Olean, Susan (David) Schafer of Peoria, Patti (Paul) Larsen of Omaha, Neb., Rob (Denise) Dunn of Hyde Park, David (Karen) Dunn of Red House, W.Va., Chuck (Lynda) Dunn of Allegany, Maureen (Jim) DeArmitt of Cuba, Mary (Jon) Friedman of Fair Haven, N.J., Jim (Shauna) Dunn of Falmouth, Maine, and Jeanne (Matt) Lippert of Allegany; 36 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn Cole of Zephyrhills, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Marian Dunn of Charlotte, N.C.
He was predeceased by two sons, Gregory W. Dunn and George C. Dunn; and a brother, William Dunn.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held Saturday (July 26, 2014) beginning with a prayer service in the funeral home at 12:30 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. in St. John's Church. The Rev. Edward Sheedy, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, with full military honors conducted by the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892. A Scripture wake service will be held Friday evening in the funeral home.
