Marion Herdman Heaney (1916 - 2012)

ANGELICA - Marion Herdman Heaney, 96, of 34 South St., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2013) at St James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Angelica, Feb. 26, 1916, she was the daughter of Florence and Joseph Herdman, Sr. On Oct. 20, 1941, she married J. William Heaney, who predeceased her in 2000. They had three sons, William (Eva) Heaney of Belfast, John (Mary) Heaney of Scottsville and Mark (Kay) Heaney of Angelica.
Following graduation from Wilsonian High School in Angelica, Mrs. Heaney studied at Craig Colony State Hospital in Groveland and at Fordham Hospital in New York City. In 1940, she received her registered nurse's degree from Craig Colony State Hospital. She was also given the "General Excellence Award in Nursing" at that time. She later received her permanent teacher's certificate by attending undergraduate college at SUNY at Geneseo, SUNY at Alfred and at Alfred University. Mrs. Heaney spent most of her professional life as a school nurse and teacher at Angelica Central School. She retired in 1973.
In addition to her service at Angelica School, Mrs. Heaney also instructed new employees at the Craig State Institution and spent two years at the Allegany County Office of Social Services. She was also the afternoon supervisor at the Allegany County Infirmary in Angelica.
Mrs. Heaney was a faithful, lifetime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Angelica. She served as secretary of the church vestry for over 40 years and was a longtime altar guild member. Mrs. Heaney was an avid antique doll collector and a member of the United Federation of Doll Clubs in New York State. Other activities included her membership in Angelica's Progress Club and the Birdsall Grange, as well as the New York State Retired Teacher's Association.
Mrs. Heaney is survived by her three sons; seven grandchildren, Mike, Logan, Aran (Teresa), Brendan (Molly) Jered (Jasmine), Kristen and Jason (Jeni); and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and two sisters, Henrietta Florence Herdman, Angelica Ruth Herdman and one brother, Joseph Herdman, Jr.

The family will be present to receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Ave., Angelica. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Angelica. Burial will be in Until The Day Dawn Cemetery, Angelica.
