ANAHEIM, Calif. - John Ryder passed away after a valiant nine-year battle with prostate cancer.
John was born in Olean, N.Y., and moved with his family to Ferndale, Wash., when he was in high school. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He served as a first lieutenant basic training commander in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a captain form the U.S. Army Artillery.
He pursued a career in aerospace beginning in Seattle at The Boeing Company, then in Denver at Martin Marietta, and retiring as vice president of contracts and pricing for Northrop Grumman Corporation.
After retirement in 1999, he pursued his love of skiing and bike riding. The family would like to thank all of John's friends in Vail, Colo., for their friendship and support. They would especially like to thank the many friends who supported John during his struggle with cancer, including the Orange County Wheelmen and the Retired Sheriff's River Trail Bike group. How he loved those great bike rides and all the friends he made along the way.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 45 years; his brother, Sandy; his sister-in-law, Mary of Bellingham, Wash.; his daughters, Kirsten of Phoenix, Ariz., and Erin (Alan) Tse; and his grandchildren, Ava and Grant of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and Louisville, Ky.
Many thanks to all the caring nurses and doctors at UCI and City of Hope.
In lieu of flowers, the Ryder Family requests donations be made to the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UC Irvine Health, in John's honor. Please send donations to UC Irvine Health c/o John Ryder & CFCCC 333 City Blvd. Suite 605, Orange, CA 92868.
A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
