LEBANON, Tenn. - Dr. Carlton "Carl" George Wood, 73, of Lebanon passed quietly Sunday (July 21, 2013) following complications from previous illnesses.

Psychologist, comedian and philosopher, Carl lived a full life in many capacities. He was passionate about his work and dedicated to improving life for everyone - patients, friends and family. Carl had many passions that he pursued vigorously. He had a love and appreciation for music and lyrics through songs that told stories. He was an avid golfer who competed in a statewide championship. He was a professional bass fisherman, competing and placing in several tournaments over many years.
In addition to his recreational passions, Carl never forgot his educational roots, which stemmed from his K-12 experiences in his small Upstate New York school, Allentown High. From his 1957 class of only eight, Carl went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University and his doctorate degree from Vanderbilt University. Carl was a licensed psychologist, practicing in Tennessee for more than three decades.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Hinkle Wood; his mother, Viola Wells Wood Goodyear of Eldred, Pa.; daughter, Marcy (Jeff) Jolton of Lincoln, Neb.; two sons, George (fiancee Janet Hargrove) Wood of Nashville, Tenn., and Jason (Laura) Wood of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Jack (Raye) Wood of Allentown, N.Y.; two stepsisters, Betty (the late John) Goodyear Connolly of Richmond, Va., and Teresa (the late Fred) Goodyear Stock of Vierra, Fla.; a stepbrother, George (Suzanne) Goodyear of Coudersport, Pa.; a granddaughter, Emma Jolton; a grandson, Josh Jolton; two step-granddaughters, Paris Hargrove and Savana Hargrove; a step-grandson, London Hargrove; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, George M. Wood of Allentown.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (July 27, 2013), at Austin & Bell Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 2619 Highway 41 South, Greenbrier. Assisting in the celebration of the life of Dr. Carlton Wood will be Dave Till, Lane Palmer, Joe Evins and family members. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will follow the service at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Greenbrier, with Josh Jolton, London Hargrove, Jeff Jolton, Jerry Choate, Larry Hinkle, Tim Hinkle, Lane Palmer and Joe Evins serving as pallbearers. A second memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, in Allentown.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests support for the revitalization project of the Allentown Union Free School "In Memory of Dr. Carlton G. Wood." Donations can be made payable to Allegany County Historical Society, P.O. Box 588, Wellsville NY 14895.
