OLEAN - Domenica "Marsha" Franzi, 101, of 303 Hamilton Ave., Olean, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 18, 2013) at her home.
Born Sept. 3, 1912, in Italy, she was a daughter of the late Dominick and Grace Catanese Sciotti. On Sept. 3, 1928 in Salina, Pa., she married her husband of 73 years, Anthony Franzi Sr., who predeceased her Jan. 29, 2001.
She was the eldest of eight children and grew up in Tinsmills, Pa., and lived in Olean all her life. Mrs. Franzi was known as a homemaker who always enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed the holidays. She was well known for her homemade bread, pizza, pies, making Italian dishes, crocheting and making afghans for her grandchildren. She also loved to travel.
Domenica was a member of St. John's Church and St. Ann's Lodge. On her 100th birthday, she received a special proclamation from State Sen. Cathy Young and a letter of congratulations from Willard Scott.
Surviving are her children, Antoinette M. Salvo of Jacksonville, Fla., Grace (Joseph) Yatzkanic of Olean, Anthony (Barbara) Franzi Jr. of Olean, and Mary (Ronald) Mater of Olean; grandchildren, Steve (Lee) Yatzkanic, Patty (Mark) Saglimben, Diane (Robert) Johnston, David (Donna) Stevenson, Jeanette (Tom) Gluszak, Andrea (Sean) McFaul, Cindy (Jerry) Nutt and Anthony Mater; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jacqueline Bratton of Hubbard, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews, including a very special and caring niece, Rose Micale of Niagara Falls, and nieces Antoinette Guarna, Josephine Maimone and Sara Anzollitto, all of the New York City area.
She was predeceased by her husband; two grandchildren, Joey Yatzkanic and Paul Stevenson; brothers Samuel, Cameron, Peter, Dominic and Anthony Sciotti; a sister, Mary Orsini; and a son-in-law, Joseph Salvo.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held Monday (Sept. 23, 2013), beginning with a prayer service in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. and followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church. Father Edward Sheedy, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
