WEST VALLEY - James J. Gerwitz, 76, of Irish Hill Road, passed away Saturday (July 19, 2014) at Olean General Hospital.

He was born Sept. 6, 1937, a son of the late Lawrence and Margaret Benz Gerwitz. On Aug. 22, 1964, he married the former Margaret "Peggy" Kuhn, who survives.
Mr. Gerwitz was a self-employed carpenter and superintendent of buildings and grounds at Ellicottville Central School. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in Germany.
He was a member of Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Ellicottville and was one of its trustees. He was an usher, a eucharistic minister and a member of the Usher's Club at Holy Name of Mary. He also was active in the Knights of Columbus and was an organ donor.
He also was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.
Besides his loving wife of 49 years, he is survived by four sons, Lawrence Gerwitz of Wheatfield, James (Chris) Gerwitz of Sanborne and Joseph Gerwitz and Andrew Gerwitz, both of Ellicottville; a daughter, Rita (Rick) Browning of Sherman; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother Paul (Betty) Gerwitz of California; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Gerwitz; and two sisters, Mildred Hoffman and Doris Ebert.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., Little Valley. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday (July 24, 2014) from Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Ellicottville. Burial with military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery in West Valley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ellicottville Volunteer Fire Department.
