O'Fallon, IL. Born in in Pittsburgh, PA in 1937, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Memorial Hospital, Southern Illinois Hospice. After graduating from the Loyal Order of Moose's Mooseheart Orphanage near Aurora IL, Al embarked on a remarkable 42-year career with the United States Air Force, with tours of duty throughout the country and overseas. He finished his 30 years of active duty as a Chief Master Sergeant working as the Enlisted Executive for three general officer Deputy Chiefs of Staff in the Headquarters, Strategic Air Command, Omaha, NE; and then served the Air Force for another 12 years as a government civilian working as the Chief of Publishing at the Headquarters, Air Mobility Command at Scott AFB IL. He was a member of the American Legion Post No 137 in O'Fallon, Air Force Sergeants Association, Armed Forces Benefit Association, American Military Society, The Heritage Foundation, O'Fallon YMCA, Memorial Hospital's "Lively Lungs" lively (and rowdy) therapy group, and MENSA. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Iffet Emel Dorn; son, Colonel Terry Dorn, United States Army, Burke, VA; son, CorVel Corporation Vice President Greg Dorn, San Mateo, CA; daughter, Titan Medical Lead Account Manager Debra Sanborn, Omaha NE; daughter-in-law, (retired Major, US Army) Nicole Dorn, Burke, VA; son-in-law, Cisco Systems Business Operations Manager Ken Wanzer, San Mateo, CA; son-in-law, TSYS Project Manager Chris Sanborn, Omaha, NE; and handsome grandsons, Alan and Calvin Dorn, Burke, VA. Al was a life-long sports participant and enthusiast; a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and St. Louis Cardinals; strong supporter of the Salvation Army, American Lung Association and Wounded Warrior Project among others; enjoyed communicating with a long list of email "buds"; was always in good spirits despite also being a political junkie; and threw back a daily scotch or two for medicinal purposes. He was a frequent contributor to the Letters opinion page of this newspaper and others, espousing the conservative view on current issues.

VISITATION 10-11am, Monday, December 24, 2012 at Schildknecht Funeral Home, 301 S. Lincoln Ave., O'Fallon, IL. FUNERAL SERVICE 11am, Monday, December 24, 2012 at the funeral home with Father Donald Moss officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, CA. Memorials in honor of Al can be made to the Lung Fibrosis Assn.
