Carpenter, Kathlyn "Katie"
Oct 12, 1929 - Dec 19, 2012
Passed away Wednesday night from Alzheimer's disease, at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines, IA. Born to Clara and William Koch in Norfolk, NE. She graduated from St. Teresa College for Women, Winona, MN, and taught High School English and Music in Wisconsin prior to joining the Nebraska State Bankers Association in Omaha as secretary to the Administrator. In 1954, she married George C. Carpenter, III, in Omaha, and in 1960, with their children, Catherine and George IV, they moved to Cedar Rapids, IA, and finally in 1964 to Des Moines where they remained. Katie was a member of the Junior Leagues of Omaha, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines; former President of the Founders Garden Club in Des Moines; and served on the early board of the Des Moines Botanical Center, and Multiple Sclerosis Board of Directors. She particularly enjoyed time spent as a volunteer at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, the Des Moines Art Center, her stimulating book clubs and gatherings with her close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Beverly K. Sydow. She is survived by husband George; daughter, Catherine E. Carpenter (David Baker), Evanston, IL; son, George C. Carpenter, IV (Jill Carpenter), Laguna Niguel, CA; sister Jean K. Swoboda, Omaha, NE; and 6 dearly loved grandchildren, Jeff, Jake and Jennifer Carpenter, and John, Owen and Helen Baker. Most appreciated was the very warm caring, and professional treatment provided to Katie by Drs. Mouw, Buroker, and Bender for her cancer and Alzheimer's illnesses, which were diagnosed almost simultaneously several years ago, and the loving and personal attention from the staff of Arbor Springs in West Des Moines during her residence.
The family would enjoy Meeting with friends 5-7pm on Thursday, December 27, at The Park at Southern Hills Center, 2929 Fox Run. A Private Family Service is scheduled in the Chapel of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul the following day. A musical Tribute in her Memory is planned next spring at the Brenton Arboretum. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Des Moines Botanical Center Foundation (909 Robert D. Ray Dr., Des Moines, IA 50316); or to the Brenton Arboretum (25141 - 260th Street, Dallas Center, IA 50063). DUNN'S FUNERAL HOME
